Researcher interior design sketch

Yesterday I stumbled upon a few books around the house, one of them had some really dark illustrations by Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson, I was influenced by it and decided to re-imagine Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft's main character's researcher room, the one that belonged to professor Angell and was left to his nephew with his research notes.
I took in account the fact he was a college teacher, a researcher and a obsessed enthusiast about his late findings about the Cult of Cthulhu and the mystery around it he tried to solve.

I pre-thought about line weight a lot since I was on traditional medium and worked with very dark micron pens, it was crucial to think deliberately in order to save the sketch. Overall, it was a gold training I assigned myself to, be it in perspective practice and line weight, and also staging.

Ya'll have a nice week.

Turtle soup Hut

A concept I had in mind while going through the book of Skillful Huntsman and other art center books.
This is a piece made to experiment with faster workflows and this time using a rough 3d block out to speed up my process.
I'm used to draw and paint everything from zero and this time it had it's advantages and disadvantages, really.

The concept of happy vibes still follow me everywhere, but this time I tried to introduce a bit of a darker mystery through the giant turtle shell, questioning that the life in these places is not always a picnic (upper side and the main focus) but when you look around and find yourself looking to bottom, you'll feel it may not be a big deal, to deal with giant monsters, and that they seemed to get away fine.
I was inspired by Dragon Ball a little, whenever a giant dinosaur chased the main character, the character would always end up having it as dinner later, which was quite funny, because he was a kid.

City Color thumbnails

During the past few days, I've been mixing scenarios of low technology with a recent acquisition of high technology, enough to keep the population go on living, and also to keep their historic architecture intact. It will be the (hopefully) last time I touch the subject of a peaceful living anarchy as society in a post apocalyptic land, as I feel it's just becoming too repeatable in my portfolio, which would be fine if I wanted to pursue a branding of sorts for me, however, I want to experiment and risk more.

The fish scales on a facade suggests they fish a lot.

Refining a thumbnail set into color, using pure painting and photobash techniques, to experiment which was the best to achieve a end result. These came too illustrative, but I liked them this way.
A set of illustrations/drawings is coming based off this scenario, to flesh out information about the surroundings and the way of life in the town.

Druid Character Development study

Hello guys. This is a druid character development, from a gnomon class and a side help from skillful huntsman from Art Center.
35 minutes tonal drawing for the portrait and some extra minutes derping with gouache.
Scanned the costume design and cleaned it a little in PS to get rid of the fuzzy lines from the pencil.
Probably will be posting more traditional studies, turned into drawings, if they turn out interesting.

Have a nice week!

Camo smuggler boat - painting

This week I took a favorite thumbnail sketch from April and took it to a finished perspective drawing, then, applied the fundamentals of color and light that I've been taught.

I've researched camouflage for boats, I know I wanted to put a spin of razzle dazzle camo, world war 1 sea ship camouflage, also dug up some camouflage from poisonous animals and mixed it together.

Some minor texture work applied.

This drawing is part of the series of concepts I did for the previous post apocalyptic project, I decided that even if the project is over, I liked it enough to gather the research studies I did for it, I liked playing with the 3 point perspective and even if it isn't painted, I felt the need to have some base drawings in my portfolio.
I couldn't move on without putting this together for upload and call it done.

WC Crime Scene

The initial moodboard for the painting went a bit like this, however I changed the value scale to more of a high contrast one. I'm just experimenting.

Last night I took some time to push the painting of one of the drawings I did, using what I learned from color and light and how some colors help portraying a dark mood with the help of value scale, aiming it to high contrast.
I wrote a little story to go with it, like a criminal file too, however I won't publish the text online anywhere but here, I may use it for a printed portfolio.

And here is the complementary text, if you can't read the small letters:

Crime Scene Report - Summary
Victim information:Name - Anthony Dallas
Occupation - Gardener, unemployed
Home Address - B852, Foyers, Inverness IV2 6XU, Scotland

Description of crime scene
Crime scene address: The Ashes Bar,
   40 Union St.
Position of the victim: On the floor, in a pool of blood with a door over it’s head.
Possible murder weapons: Broken glass bottle of liquor found on the floor near the victim, crowbar found on a dumpster outside the emergency exit.
Initial findings:
Time of death: Estimated from liver temperature: to be between 10.00 and 12.00 pm on 11/11/19
Cause of death: Blunt force trauma to the head.

----

Agent’s diary: The last week events took place in the most
peculiar sites , often suggesting a religious cult or mentally disturbed individuals ganging together, who seem to follow a utopian prophecy. However the recent report took place in the most raw and rudimentar place, to be a crime scene,
the killer does not seem to be very skilled for that matter, and did not re-arrange the slaughter site to make the
police job a difficult one. There are prints, blood and sweat all over. This does not seem to be related to the event of last week.

Work in Progress - Sketch drop

I was avoiding posting sketches, unfinished work and processes on my blog, but then I remember the purpose of having a blog like this is to streamline the information about my personal art development history.
There are many places online where I can post finished artwork, and the need to expose these sketches to the world is still vital, so this is the place, my home to sketch, work in progress and others as well as finished art.

The following works are unfinished and done fast, I will hope to render them later in full color and detail.

A) Criminal scene in bathroom:

B) My hometown in a dystopia spin:

C) Environment thumbnail practice:

Keeping track of progress and processes!

Weatherdeep Kid Klan - A Post Apocalyptic tale

To continue the series of illustrations, I've gone a step ahead in storytelling and wrote a story that would complement the concept art I am currently working on.
I'll keep this brief and just post it below, welcome to my page, I hope you enjoy. :)

Ambient

Three thousand years from today's date, after a age of strong climate change on Earth, the planet and it’s continents had started to move around, to destroy themselves and little by little, to reshape.
Now with new continents, in the once peaceful continent of Midian, it was born the peaceful nation of Weatherdeep, where it’s explorers who had been blessed to come by this land, filled with gold and zinc, had established themselves around two hundred years ago. It was not a long time to wait until the wealth and prosperous mood of it’s first capital to spread from the main city walls to outside, and new villages and ports all around Weatherdeep started to be built.
It was not long until the youngest of the explorers of the ancient tribe of founders, Jacob Kentucky, the mascot and dearest of the sailing crew, to earn the status of president of the main city capital, he took the land to glory, as trusty guardian until the next seven years…

To the north of Weatherdeep there is the independent city of Zion, to west lies the nation of Thile, and however the relations between them were always civilized, it was not long until some of the cities of Thile start to become jealous of the symbiotic relations between the capital and Zion, and if it was not enough, there were rumors of a deep vain wish of the nearby continent from the south, Hillrock, about the wealth and success of Weatherdeep.

The lack of information on the villages to the east, which was rich in technology in the pre-Midian era, started to show a lack of climate conditions to grow food within their land, forcing the scientists of each continent to develop their own technology and own resources, paving the path to the nuclear-organic war of the seven legions.

Old Tree house

A group of adventurers of the now deserted and ruined area of the old city of Sunnyside, took over a vehicle that was partly destroyed, from the pre-Midian era, a school bus to which they use has hangar, a bus that was not used for centuries and was once stolen by looters from an old museum of antiquities, and as such, was left behind later to be acquired by the boys clan.
There has been some time since the four brothers of no blood bound, have been searching for supplies to extend their survival in the wasteland, at least for as long as a couple more merchants passes by, which can take months to happen and it’s not really certain to ever happen to being with…

Of the four survivors, all are boys, of young age between ten and thirteen years old, one may meet: Headz, the team's sniper, ence the name; Benny, the closest brother to Headz; Moody, the clan shaman, who assumes to have some sort of psychic and healing ability, as doctor and then, Caesar, the self-proclaimed group leader, the one who has armors that are so heavy that he can almost not move from where he stands, all of them made from scraps, tires and other do-it-yourself garbage that may or may not help stop a bullet.

Six hours have gone by, Benny and Caesar find themselves heading to the village to the north, for a supply run.
Headz doesn’t stop from running his eyes on his telescope every now and then, which by itself was already an habit he picked up from being a sentinel to the group defenses…
Headz is always helped by the impertinent shaman, in hopes to finally see his brothers come back home, it doesn’t matter at this point if they return with empty or full pockets, all it matters to them is that they do return home.
When the moment comes that they give up on the watching for a while and rest their gaze from the surroundings to think about climbing down the house, they notice a glimpse, a light, that comes closer, probably a lens or reflective focus of some kind, something that blinds them for a few seconds.

They turn again and find a girl, almost a woman by now, but older than the ages of Moody and Headz combined together. She speaks:
<<Do you guys have radio antennas? I can pay… it’s kind of... urgent.>> She pauses, tries to force a smile and hide the fact she was nervous.

Even if they are little, they are not stupid, at all, the brothers don’t like to negotiate with adults, and certainly not with someone who they never seen around, but what matters is that the girl came with a modified bike, and that can be useful as a token of trade, antennas, batteries and junk they don’t need for a ride or even firepower help to take to the town towards north, it wouldn’t take more than fifteen minutes to get there, at least with that bike, and they would avoid the sand mutants, they wouldn’t catch the bike and would be scared off by it’s noise alone, they hate it.

She sighs and her facial expression changes to another level of deep anxiety. <<So, will you help me? I have this radio and I do not think it’s a broken antenna, I haven’t heard from two of my companions from my group ever since they infiltrated to the town up at north…>>

However they have always learned to do not trust the older people from an early age, and let alone someone with attributes from the opposite sex, as it is normal for boys of their age to distrust, the fact remains that she can be useful and her fear is visible… she is not that much older than them.
And after all, what is going on at the town at north? The supply run was almost a shot in the dark anyway, it is thought to not hold much in food or other useful items, since the last radioactive storm hit it. Whatever it is, Headz and Moody fill up with fury, end up agreeing and set up to meet and follow up north at around noon.

<<We will go.>> Headz says while he nods with his sniper rifle towards the girl, from up above the bus, casually pointing. <<But no funny business.>>

Whatever it is, they really get angry but above everything, they want to teach a lesson to whom or what it is that is causing all the ruckus.

Character designs made for the series. Full story will come soon next month. I'm done writing it but there are still designs to be finished, meanwhile maybe better detail ideas pop up to it.

These guys live in a school bus in a post apocalyptic era. It's their base camp, tree house and boys club house. It was fun coming up with their daily routines to populate their belongings as well as their environment, which will be posted later as well.

As always, I start with pencil sketches, figure out the pose and then use tracing paper to dress them in a new traditional art layer. I used some of the sketches in the final presentation, I just like it that way.

Photography resources applied to other Arts

Keeping track here today, of valuable resources that have helped me to work on my 3D renders and visualize everything better on a painting.

Oh and right! They will help take better photos as well!

One of the four post apocalyptic kid designs, to be introduced in a narrative and series of illustrations for my own personal concept, story and portfolio.
His name is Headz, he snipers, ence the name.
Headz, is part of a four member male kid clan. The rest of the story will follow up on the next uploads.

This is the continuation of the process previously shared. Full character body shots and environment to come later on.

Post Apocalyptic Character Design WIP

During the early weeks of this month and the following next weeks, I'll be working on a set of illustrations for college. I was thrilled to find that we're going to have a free theme and medium as final work for graduation and that I can do anything about anything and however I like, so naturally I chose a concept art series of illustrations within a theme I had in my head for a while.

It's a post apocalyptic future where a gang of kids live as survivor group. Here is a progression of a character digital painting and a early pencil sketch. More to come.

3D Mech model!

It has been a rough month overall, but everything is fiiiiiiiiiiiiiine.
And to take a break from the digital painting and drawing, I focused on a 3D model and texture of a mech concept by Alexander Iglesias, I tried to apply a heavy worn look similar to the ones from the insanely talented team at Kallamity.
It was very chill, textured in Quixel, rendered in Marmoset and mostly done in Maya hard surface.
Not 100% happy with it, as it is far from the quality Kallamity delivers, but as always, this blog is to track my progress through my CG journey.

Coloring challenge

I got off from college this week, reaaaaaaally smooth stuff that I'm on happy easter holidays so I have time to dedicate towards concept art! I'm running in like two schools, I have the art and design college that I go by day, which I quite like, and then I have the online lectures for concept art... it's all worth it in the end.

Anyway, I took the line work from the past week and took it to a color stage, meanwhile I heard a lot of constructive comments towards the work I posted and decided to weight them all into a healthy balance... I haven't started diving into digital coloring a lot and I'm focusing more on perspective drawing here, but I still liked to have this work presentable enough, so I taught myself a few things about digital painting before I finish the perspective drawing course.

Lucky me, I can't skateboard while the rain comes around the day, so I find dedication to devote to concept art. :)

WIP: Post apocalyptic Happyland

This is a work assignment I've been doing for building perspective scenes, a Post Apocalyptic Happyland :D I think I'm done with the line work and will take this to a final illustration.

Storytelling:
Before that, a little bit about what I did and the storytelling involved: This is a city that lives in a joyful anarchy, I was inspired by Ska and Reggae Punk music, Cuba, Portugal, Spain, Brazil and latin countries in general, also researched documentaries about gypsy cultures in India and I learned a LOT of mind numbing cool things! A Gnomon Workshop from Syd Mead told me: re-invent the clichés... this is my attempt at that, I always keep that quote with me while working.

The process:
I started off with rough pencil and paper sketches with basic perspective involved still, but not worrying about it so much that it got in the way of form language. With this, I also did a lot of thumbnail sketching, to get my mind away from the clichés. I learned that the horizon line and placement of the camera helped a lot to sell the two main buildings in front of the piece, as you can look up and down on them easily! They also do well at ignoring the roofs just enough to focus the story on the building facades, however, I decided it'd be cool to have houses on top of houses and that also did work out good, (I think?) I learned a lot about perspective in Photoshop.

Here is a moodboard of references too:

Vehicle Thumbnails

As a starter of this blog, I'm posting my work here, as a progress tracker.
This is my homework assignment to vehicle sketching, I've used a lot of different techniques to achieve form language, and then different techniques to sketch in perspective, ultimately shading and presentation.

Quick background design: The following sketches came with the study of design principles, form language and aerodynamic formulas, and of course, fantasy.
These factors were pushed and blended into one drawing as if all these stated points were one, and as if always had been.

The vehicle, as design object, always had a way of making it to an individual lif as either a trophy to assure social status or a necessity of transportaion.
In these studies of design, we have both fused into one, for although the rich side of  the population had been wanting a robust, safer and linear form of a vehicle, the other round transports have been modified from previous models from vehicle design timeline. even though these are not safer, they assure speed and silence, which is crucial to deliver rare physical goods, which were almost erradicated in value from this digital/tech era.
